A NEW SPECIES OF CIRCOPOROXYLON FROM THE KOTA FORMATION (JURASSIC), PRANHITA-GODAVARI BASIN, INDIA, AND PALAEOBIOGEOGRAPHY OF THE GENUS

Abstract

Circoporoxylon kotaense, a new species of fossil wood, is systematically described from the Jurassic Kota Formation, in the PranhitaGodavari Basin, India. A review of the distribution of global records revealed that the genus is widely distributed in both the northern and the southern hemispheres and favoured clarifications regarding its palaeobiogeography. The distribution of the genus, ranging from the Jurassic to the Miocene, indicates that the limiting factor throughout the species existence was climate. The analysis of fossils in a palaeogeographic context suggests that the extinct genus preferred warm temperate climates. Resumen. UNA NUEVA ESPECIE DE CIRCOPOROXYLON DE LA FORMACIÓN KOTA (JURÁSICO), CUENCA PRANHITA-GODAVARI, INDIA, Y LA PALEOBIOGEOGRAFÍA DEL GÉNERO. Circoporoxylon kotaense, una nueva especie de madera fósil hallada en la Formación Jurásica Kota, en la Cuenca de Pranhita-Godavari, India, es sistemáticamente descripta. Una revisión global de la distribución de los registros reveló que el género está ampliamente distribuido tanto en el hemisferio norte y como en el sur y permitió obtener un esquema más claro respecto a su paleobiogeografía. La distribución del género, desde el Jurásico hasta el Mioceno, indica que el factor limitante en la existencia de las diferentes especies fue el clima. El análisis de los fósiles en un contexto paleogeográfico sugiere que los géneros extintos prefieren los climas templados cálidos.
