NEUROMORFOLOGÍA DE UTAETUS BUCCATUS (XENARTHRA, DASYPODIDAE): UN ARMADILLO DEL EOCENO TEMPRANO DE LA PROVINCIA DEL CHUBUT, ARGENTINA
Abstract
The Casamayoran dasypodid armadillo Utaetus bucea tus Ameghino provides the only known evidence of the skull structure in xenarthrans prior to the Oligocene. An endocranial cast of the neotype was prepared and studied, in order to make comparisons with living dasypodids. The brain of U. buccatus has a single prominent neocortical sulcus in the frontoparietal part of each hemisphere and an uninterrupted rhinal fissure. This inferred neocortex is very different from the neocortical model that characterizes living armadillos.Downloads
