Abstract

Three gymnosperm woods of the Melo Formation (Lower Permian) of Arroyo Seco, Departrnent of Rivera, Uruguay, are described. One is referred to Barakaroxylon jhariense (Surange and Maithy) Kulkarni, Maithy and Surange on account of the anatomical characters of the pith, primary and secondary xylem. Barakaroxylon has a wide occurrence in the Permian of Gondwana. It is compared with Polysolenoxylon but treated as a valid genus. Only secondary xylem is present in the other woods and therefore they are assigned to Araucarioxylon. Araucarioxvlon ningahense (Maheshwari) Crisafulli and Lutz nov. combo is a species also present in the Permian of the Raniganj Formarion of India and Mount Glossopteris of Antarctica.
