LAS CUEVAS CON ACTENOMYS (RODENTIA, OCTODONTIDAE) DE LA FORMACION CHAPADMALAL (PLIOCENO SUPERIOR) DE MAR DEL PLATA Y MIRAMAR (PROVINCIA DE BUENOS AIRES)

Abstract

Se describen las cuevas de Actenomys, un Ctenomyinae fósil de la Formación Chapadmalal. Después de estudiar 205 cuevas se concluye que los túneles tenían 13 cm de diámetro promedio y 5 m de largo máximo, eran inclinados (30°-80°) ya veces con trayectos horizontales. Algunos túneles, terminaban en una cámara y tenían, a su vez, otros laterales terminados también en cámaras. 75% de las cuevas tenían restos de Actenomys y 16% de Paedotherium, Dolicavia y Paradidelphis brachyodonta fueron otros mamíferos encontrados. Fueron observadas también algunas cuevas de Lagostomus. Se analizaron las posibles relaciones entre estas especies. Fue hecha una revisi6n sobre la estructura de las cuevas y algunos hábitos de los Octodontoidea actuales, realizandose un esquema evolutivo general donde se incluyen los nuevos datos sobre Actenomys. Las porciones de túneles horizontales en estas cuevas son interpretadas como un primer paso en la tendencia hacia la construcción de cuevas completamente horizontales en las especies actuales de Ctenomys.
