UN NUEVO PSILOPTERINAE (AVES: RALLIFORMES) DEL MIOCENO TARDIO DE LA PROVINCIA DE BUENOS AIRES, REPUBLICA ARGENTINA
Abstract
A new species of Psilopterus, P. colzecus, from the Vivero Member of the Arroyo Chasicó Fonnation (late Miocene) SW of Buenos Aires province is described. The comparative analysis of the new species allowed to the following conclusions: 1-Psilopterus colzecus and the other species of the genus were more specialized for running than the extant Cariamidae; 2- Psilopterus colzecus was an efficient predaceous bird, as indicated by these two factors: a) speed, and b) brief flights competence; 3- Psilopterus colzecus and probably the other species of the genus were active terrestrial predaceous birds in the grassland ecosystems and/or in open areas of woody regions. Psiloplerus colzecus is the latest record species of the genus. Until now the genus was recorded only in the early Miocene of Patagonia.Downloads
