UN NUEVO CAVIINAE (RODENTIA, CAVIIDAE)?DE LA FORMACION ARROYO CHASICO (PLIOCENO INFERIOR) DE LA PROVINCIA DE BUENOS AIRES
Abstract
The author describes a new form of Caviidae from the Arroyo Chasico Formation (Lower Pliocene of the Buenos Aires Province) under the name Allocavia chasicoense gen. et sp. nov. It is the oldest Caviidae known, and represents a new cheek-teeth morphological type because of its more or less laminar posterior lobe. The morphological patterns of the others extinct and living Caviidae are compared, recognizing four differents types, which correspond to four groups: Cavia group, Microcavia group, Gqlea group and Allocavia group.Downloads
